Kidney stones (renal lithiasis, nephrolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys.

Kidney stones have many causes and can affect any part of your urinary tract — from your kidneys to your bladder.

Often, stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together. Renal calculi mean kidney stone and having a stone in any location of urinary tract is referred to as urolithisis.

It is consider one of the oldest diseases which occur in the urinary tract and it rarely happens in children, it takes various in shapes and sizes and may be very small or as large as the orange size, it is the most painful urologic disorder

Between 1% and 15% of people globally are affected by kidney stones at some point in their lives.

Some people say it is a pain worse than childbirth. Sometimes kidney stone pain starts as a dull ache, but it can quickly escalate to severe cramping or sharp, wincing pain. You usually feel it in your back or side, underneath your rib cage. The pain can radiate into your lower abdomen or groin

“Kidney stone pain can be very severe, and many patients report it as the worst they have ever experienced,”

according to Mike Nguyen, MD, urologist at USC Urology of Keck Medicine of USC and associate professor of clinical urology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

“But, how does this compare to the pain of childbirth? It turns out that the reported amount of pain in both situations is almost identical.”
